Living in New York City, I’m just as glad not to be burdened by car ownership… but the sight of this 1982 Mercedes-Benz 300 Wagon, parked on East 15th Street, with a “For Sale” sign on its windscreen made me stop and dream. A 43-year-old car would certainly suit me: no weird distracting screen taking up half the dashboard, no computer system to navigate when one wants to turn on the radio. As Janis Joplin sang, “Oh Lord – won’t you buy me a Mercedes-Benz?”
